✦ Synopsis
Mary O’Hara lived for ten years on the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming. Drawing on her experience of ranch life, she wrote three novels—My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead, and Green Grass of Wyoming—that were read and loved by an entire generation of Americans.
WYOMING SUMMER is a documentary novel based on the journal Miss O’Hara kept while living on the ranch. The Goose Bar Ranch teemed with life—animal and human. Roamer, the dairy bull, Rachel, Miss O’Hara’s skittish white setter, Missy, a tortoise shell cat, and Trombone, a beautiful, half-wild black stallion, are among the major characters, along with a mixed bag of ranch hands and ten energetic teen-age boys who attended the dude-ranch summer camp which Miss O’Hara and her husband operated.
The principal characters, though, are Mary O’Hara and her husband. They battled the fierce Wyoming weather and an endless series of farm crises—ranging from a windmill which refused to move to the charge of an angry bull. Miss O’Hara milked her cows, composed music, and rode her favorite horses over the sweeping Wyoming landscape.
Few authors have ever written of ranches, animals, and people with more warmth and understanding.
