The interactions at the carbon fiber surfaces are of fundamental importance for the reinforcement of polymers with carbon fibres. A modified sessile drop technique is proposed for the determination of the surface free energy of carbons and the interactions at carbon surfaces (work of adhesion). The

✦ Synopsis
Works
of adhesion WPL between aqueous solutions with pH values in the range from I to 14 and carbon fibers from different sources, which were additionally treated in an inert atmosphere or in oxygen, were measured by use of a microbalance. These works of adhesion W,,, were found to show distinct stepwise dependencies on the pH value. The works of adhesion W,, are attributed to dispersion interactions W$?. and various acid-base interactions W$/-in the latter case between the acidic and basic surface groups of carbon and the various basic and acidic aqueous solutions.
