Woody Debris Research in Germany -an Introduction
The role of woody debris has been a focus of stream-related research in North America for the last two decades. In other parts of the world this factor has long been overlooked. This is especially true for Europe where wood in streams is far less apparent due to intensive management of the riparian areas and active removal of large woody debris (LWD).
However, in the last few years the relevance of LWD for morphology, community composition and organic matter budgets of streams has increasingly become a focus of stream research in Germany due to the following reasons:
