✦ Synopsis
Infrared reflection spectra of GaAs with surface gratings contain the signature of surface phonon polaritons (SPPs) and Wood anomalies. For grating periods comparable with the vacuum wavelength of the SPPs, small gaps appear to be present in the SPP dispersion. For certain polarization conditions, the observed spectral features cannot be explained by the SPP dispersion of a flat surface alone.
