The Raven seemed a ghost ship and its master, Black Terence, some demon cursed by Heaven and leading his crew to a watery Hellβ¦
What curse had Providence or Satan laid upon him? Here sat the Raven, points east from Jamaica and as willing as ever to sail onward for the Main; and yet she rested upon the rolling waves as if chained to them, refusing to move. Theyβd had fair and healthy winds since casting off; but today, at mid-afternoon, those winds had ceased.
It was madness. The winds had never failed for Vulmea in these waters in twenty years of brigandry. Yet here sat his galleon, and here wasted his men β their tempers short and falling shorter.
Burning with rage and unable to do aught of it, Terence stood on the foredeck. The night was clear, the full moon high, the stars brilliant behind massive blue clouds that hurried to destinations on the other side of the world. Those clouds moved; the waves moved; the Raven sat still as if embedded in stone.
Vulmea stood in the warm quiet night, leaning at the rail, wondering at the stars and clouds, wondering at his curse; and foully, in his jeopardy, he swore against Kate OβDonnell and the shadows that she had sent upon him again β the curse of The Witch of The Indies
