seam can sustain a load of about 35o lbs./in. 2 of seam indefinitely without failure. The limit for pretinned I/2-inch flat lock seams was found to be about 375 lbs./in3 These values can be employed to design seams for the conditions under which they are to be used. The bureau recommends that a factor of safety be adopted since it is not possible properly to inspect a finished seam. This information will be more fully described in the September number of the Bureau of Standards Journal of Research.
