✦ Synopsis
This article deals with new criteria for the ovalling onset of thin circular cylindrical shells exposed to a cross-flow . The onset flow velocity criterion is based on a balance between the negative aerodynamic damping and the shell structural damping coefficients . The vibration mode occurrence criterion is based on a balance between the input energy from the aerodynamic forces acting on the shell wall and the energy dissipated by structural damping . A comparison of the predicted and measured results at the onset of ovalling shows close agreement . The onset flow velocity criterion is also compared with four available criteria for clamped -free and clamped -clamped cylindrical shells .
