Henry Wilt tiene un sueño dorado: asesinar a su esposa, con la que lleva doce años de amargo matrimonio. Pero tiene la suerte de poder dedicar el tiempo de sus clases a idear fantásticas quimeras sobre la mejor forma de practicar el asesinato perfecto con su mujer. El azar, la desaparición de su esposa y la generosa imaginación del autor hacen que Wilt se vea acusado de un asesinato que no ha cometido. Se había limitado a entrenarse, practicando sus sueños criminales con una muñeca hinchable. Ello propicia una serie de situaciones disparatadas en las que un comisario tiene todos los puntos para volverse loco, el lector tiene todos los puntos para reír a mandíbula batiente y Wilt tiene todos los puntos para enloquecer de amargura al primero y de risa a los segundos. Escena a escena, página a página, el lector se siente progresivamente sorprendido, provocado, burlado, lanzado al disparate y, finalmente, divertido hasta la carcajada.
