In honour of Willem A. Manschot and in celebration of his 70th birthday a number of colleagues in ophthalmology and ophthalmic pathology -and among them many personal friends from the earliest days of his career -have made a contribution to this anniversary volume.

The various stages of development of Manschot's expert knowledge in ophthalmic pathology could not but lead to the most important position in this field in the Netherlands and to a place in the front ranks of ophthalmic pathologists beyond the borders of our small country.

Born on 3rd January 1915, in Winterswijk, a town situated in the most eastern part of the Netherlands, in a family which generated several physicians, Manschot graduated from secondary school in 1931. He studied medicine in Amsterdam until 1938. In that year his first publication, a paper on laparoscopy, appeared in 'Het Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde'. After a period of only 15 months as a resident in the Department of Pathology of the Amsterdam University (Head: Prof. Dr. H.T. Deelman) he was awarded the M.D. in 1940 for his thesis on progeria of Gilford. Five months in the Department of Surgery (Head: Dr. J.Ph. Backer) filled in the waiting period until he started his training in ophthalmology. As a resident he stayed for 5 years in the
