✦ Synopsis
The use of the moments of the Wigner distribution function is proposed as a tool to measure the paraxial character of an optical system. As an example, the moments of the Wigner distribution function of an initial Gaussian are utilized to show that the paraxial approximation is valid for an optical system with spherical aberration, and wrong for a system with astigmatism.
