✦ Synopsis
This paper is aimed at expansion of the constant current region and improvement of the output resistance characteristic of a resonant-type constant current converter. First, a new booster is proposed, consisting of an n-stage cascade of circuits in which the series capacitor on the input side of the voltage doubling rectifier is used as a resonant capacitor. Next, by introducing this booster, a converter of a resonant current discontinuous mode type is proposed. Results of its analysis are verified by experiment. It is found that the constant current region is expanded in proportion to the number of stages n given above without any control and the output resistance characteristic is improved to n times in the present system. In the test circuit with a booster with n = 3, the dc output current is kept almost constant at 100 mA in the wide range of output voltage variation of 0 V to 240 V by the variation of the load resistance. This constant current characteristic is considered excellent. The output resistance in this range is 30 k:. These results are confirmed to agree well with the theoretical values.
