β¦ Synopsis
This is a novel of Darcy and Elizabeth which begins with Wickham killing Darcy β at least, so Wickham thinks. In fact, he does not kill Darcy, but his attempt does cause Darcy permanent amnesia about most of his past life.
The book describes how, in the months following Wickhamβs attempt to murder him, Darcy, with the help of close family, friends, and staff, attempts to recreate his life and discover what kind of man he was β information which sometimes both surprises and distresses him. Two other questions also plague him: who wanted to kill him and who is the small, beautiful, dark-haired woman of whom he incessantly dreams. He remembers nothing of the attempt on his life and his confidants all assure him they knew nothing of a small, beautiful, dark-haired woman in his life.
By a series of coincidental occurrences, he meets Elizabeth Bennet and recognizes her as the woman of his dreams. His dilemma then becomes to decide if he should try to make his dreams come true, and, once he does, to find a way to convince her she should marry him. And always, there is the threat of Wickham learning of his unsuccessful revenge and trying again.
