Ein Brand in einer alten Lagerhalle. Am Tatort zwei Siebzehnjährige, einer davon (der vermutliche Brandstifter) mit Verbrennungen, die beide in die Psychiatrie eingeliefert werden. Einige Monate zuvor: In der Schule hängen August und Jack mit völlig verschiedenen Typen rum, privat verbindet die beiden aber seit Langem eine intensive Freundschaft. Doch Jack, Vorzeigeschüler, Spitzensportler, Mädchenschwarm, entwickelt immer stärkere Halluzinationen und driftet mehr und mehr in eine Fantasiewelt ab. In dieser ist er der König, der »Wicker King«, und August ist sein Ritter. Um Jack nah zu bleiben und zu verhindern, dass dieser sich endgültig in seiner Scheinwelt verliert, lässt sich August auf das Spiel ein: Er begibt sich gemeinsam mit Jack in dessen Fantasiewelt hinein und steuert sie beide damit genau auf die Katastrophe zu, die er verhindern wollte.
