✦ Synopsis
One fall afternoon, the Karcecs, a family of four, begrudgingly move from their home in Millansville, West Virginia to Retchen, Ohio. But, when times are tough, sometimes you have to do what you don't want to do. Financially, things have been hard, Mom and Dad fight all the time anymore, and fifteen-year-old Gary and ten-year-old Sammy only have themselves to look out for one another.
The house they move into is a fixer-upper down by the river, in a town known for crime and poverty. However, that's all the least of their worries, as Gary and Sammy discover when they inadvertently knock a hole in the side of the staircase—finding a soot-covered room and an underground tunnel leading to a door constructed of bones and a strange, sacrificial altar. Sammy soon sees a dark figure standing at the foot of his bed that night, threatening to kill him before, then, disappearing. Nobody, not even Gary, believes him.
That changes, however, after Gary, too, glimpses the figure. Within weeks, bizarre events begin to unfold, and every one witnesses unexplainable things that can't possibly be real... until, that is, Gary discovers they are actually being pitted against each other by a once-living, now-deceased—but not gone—entity hell-bent on destroying his family from the inside.
