β¦ Synopsis
The wants of a patient in counseling and psychotherapy are potentially significant factors in the therapeutic exchange@). Gould, Paulson, and Daniels-Epps (4), for example, found that of the individuals who called psychiatric clinics for help, those with the most clearly defined reasons for seeking help tended to show up, while those with the vaguest wants tended not to show up. It was concluded that, in general, any aid in helping the individual define his experienced problem would be useful.
The present study analyzed patient reported wants in a college-student population from the viewpoint of both patients and their therapist. Such an analysis may be of potential value to aid therapists to determine and clarify their patients' reasons for seeking help.
