The word "robot" is usually attributed to the Czechoslovak writer ~apek. Reviewing his mechanistically physiological image, we are led back further in Czech history to the "Golem" of 16th century Prague. Based on Talmudic and Cabbalistic tradition this legendmwhose origins go back to the 11th centurymseparates material and non-material properties. The latter are characterized by kno wledge, numbers and procedures. An attempt is made to show how these three concepts can be used in designing software for today's industrial robots. Software which is properly designed is much better than that which simply emerges from ad hoc considerations.
