โœฆ Synopsis

The distinction between intrinsic value and extrinsic value is a standard topic in moral philosophy, and one which is generally considered to be of fundamental importance. However, the definitions of these terms that I am familiar with have some curious features which raise doubts in my mind about how certain things of value are to be classified. My aim in this essay is to alert others to the nature and significance of these definitional anomalies. I hope thereby to point the way to improved discussions of these terms in books and articles of the future.

A view of science as a culturally-mediated way of thinking and knowing suggests that learning can be defined as engagement with scientific practices. How students engage in school science is influenced by whether and how students view themselves and whether or not they are the kind of person who eng
