β¦ Synopsis
This paper is a review of the changes brought about in the magnetic properties of "iron" during the period I87o to I928 and shows the absurdity of using "iron" as a standard for comparison. The latest (I928) value for the initial permeability (~0) of "iron" is given as I i5o , its maximum permeability (~max) as 6I,ooo, and its hysteresis loss (Wh) as 3o0 ergs per cubic centimeter per cycle for B = IO,OOO gausses. The corresponding values prior to 19oo were: ~0 = 250 /Zmax = 2600, Wh = 3,000. * Armco Ingot Iron is used for comparison because of its excellent magnetic properties particularly at high inductions for which the permeability approaches that for vacuum fused electrolytic iron.
