The Production of oil of American Wormseed, U. S. P., in Illinois**This investigation was undertaken because the supply of wormseed oil has been for several years vcry inadequate to the demand, and this condition has prevented extensive use of the oil in the treatment of domestic animalsβ€”a field in which it is much needed. Owing to the low individual value of such animals as hogs, for example, it is not economical to treat them with a drug of such high price as wormseed oil. This paper is a report of the first year’s work in producing this oil at the Experiment Station of the Moorman Mfg. Co., Quincy, Ill. It is planned to continue the work on a much larger scale, covering every phase of the problem. Anyone wishing to produce the oil can obtain the full cooperation of this company on request.

The cultivation of hydrastis**This article is written in the first person, and, by request of the editor, gives facts concerning Hydrastis culture as observed in my own experimentations, corroborated by others known to me personally. No attempt has therefore been made to embody the experiences of persons who have heretofore printed articles on the subject, nor have my own previous publications, or my own photographs and detail notes'been used at all, excepting briefly. The cuts, excepting those showing the Hydrastis farm of Dr. Homsher, are from Drugs and Medicines of North America, 1884, or from others of my previous prints on the subject. The object being to present the problem so as to save to others experimental wanderings, I must yet urge the reader who proposes to enter the field of Hydrastis culture, to study carefully the Bulletins issued OR this subject by the Agricultural Department of the United States Government, especially the admirable pamphlet of Miss Alice Henkel and G. Fred Klugh, of the Bweau of Plant Industry.-L.

Acute and Chronic Toxicity of Veratrum Viride††The Veratrum viride studied was the whole-powdered drug marketed by Irwin, Neisler & Co. under the name, Vertavis. The work reported herein was supported by a grant from this firm. The batch of powder used in these experiments was stated by the manufacturer to have been assayed biologically by the Craw method on Daphnia magna. One Craw unit of the material studied was stated to be 15.6mg. With regard to this assay, Mr. R. O. Craw has been so kind as to allow us to publish a brief explanation: A reference lot of Yerolrum oirid; powder was set-aside as a standard and a 10% w/v aqueous extract was made of this powder. The average median length of life in 50 assays of 1000 daphnia on immersion in the solution was determined to be 2.22 hours. The daphnia were considered dead when the heart was found to be in systolic standstill on microscopic examination. Succeeding lots of powder were assayed and their potency determined by relating the median length of life of daphnia to 2.22 hours, which is one unit. Twenty assays of 10 animals each were used on each lot of powder.‑‑The authors wish to thank Dr. J. F.
