โœฆ Synopsis

Two corrosion cases have been described. The common factor in these cases was the use of the pitting resistance equivalent (PRE) as a fine-tuning aid in materials selection. The limits of the PRE as a tool for estimating the critical pitting temperature have been demonstrated using published data. It is concluded that the PRE tells us what we already know, the higher alloyed is an austenitic stainless steel the greater is its pitting resistance, and that the use of the PRE as a fine-tuning aid in materials selection carries a high risk.
