✦ Synopsis
The wetting phase transition of grain boundaries (GBs) and grain-boundary triple junctions (GB TJs) by the melt has been studied in the Al-30 wt.%Zn and Al-10 wt.%Zn-4 wt.%Mg polycrystals. The condition of complete wetting is weaker for TJs (r GB > ffiffi ffi 3 p r SL ) than that for GBs (r GB > 2r SL ), r GB being the GB energy and 2r SL being the energy of the solid/liquid interphase boundary. As a result the temperature of TJ wetting transition should be lower than that of GB wetting transition T wGB . It has been experimentally observed for the first time that TJs become completely wetted at T wTJ , which is about 10-15 °C below T wGB .

A previously developed model of the dependence of grain boundary (GB) segregation on GB character has been exercised to investigate solidstate wetting transitions at GBs, and their anisotropy. In the case of binary systems displaying a solid-state miscibility gap, it is shown that the wetting transi
