sub'-zero temperatures normally prevail, and more study of the properties of materials at these temperatures would seem to be in order. Work of this character is now in progress at the Bureau, plain carbon steels being the phase now under investigation. The tensile, hardness and impact properties of a given carbon steel in heat-treated, normalized, and colddrawn conditions are being compared at temperatures from q-20 ยฐ C. (68 ยฐ F.) down to -80 ยฐ C. (-112 ยฐ F.). Particular attention is being directed to the effects of inherent austenitic grain size on the low temperature properties, as well as the effect on the properties at room temperature of the minimum temperature to which the steel has previously been cooled, and the length of time the steel has been maintained at that minimum temperature.
