✦ Synopsis

Mass urbanisation is, and will continue to be, a major challenge faced by humankind. New cities are being constructed at an unprecedented rate and in China for example, rural to urban migration currently runs at 15 million people per year. As a benchmark, 15% of the world's population lived in cities one century ago. This proportion has increased to 50% and the number of cities with a population over 1 million has risen from 83 in 1950 to more than 400 today. According to a United Nations' report, cities cover only 2% of the world's land surface, yet consume 75% of the world's natural resources and produce 75% of its waste.

Without careful management, mass urbanisation can result in social instability, undermining the capacity of cities to be environmentally sustainable and economically successful. A new model of sustainability is needed. This will provide greater incentives to save energy, reduce consumption of resources and protect the environment. Sustainable cities should be a dense and socially diverse environment where economic and social activities overlap and where communities are focused around neighbourhoods. Cities increase energy efficiency, consume fewer resources, produce less pollution and avoid urban sprawl. Future cities must be developed or adapted to meet the emerging needs of its citizens.

I am delighted to announce the publication of Sustainable Cities and Society (SCS) by Elsevier Limited. SCS will publish a wide range of original high quality papers covering fundamental and applied research, critical reviews and case studies. The journal focuses on research and multi-disciplinary work aiming to reduce the environmental and societal impact of future cities. It will stimulate exchange of ideas and knowledge transfer in the field of sustainable cities.

Research papers, case studies, review articles on important developments, special issues on themed topics or devoted to international conferences and reviews of books and major reports will all feature, as its Aims and Scope show.
