✦ Synopsis

English in the world and the world in English; Selma Sonntag tackles the complexities of official language movements. Other essays range wider, including Nancy Hornberger on Quechua language planning in Peru, Thomas Donahue on U.S. policies and compensatory opinion, Ofelia GarcΓa on Spanish language loss, Brian Bullivant on ideological influences, Marilyn Martin-Jones and Mukul Saxena on supporting or contain-ing bilingualism, and Karen Ann Watson-Gegeo and David Welchman Gegeo on language and power in the Solomon Islands. These studies are most specifically addressed to graduate students in linguistics and in language teaching, but the major themes will be of critical interest to classroom teachers and school policy makers as well. These themes include (among others) the various types of power connected to language teaching, the ways that language policies reflect power struggles, the need to examine English teaching in the context of English as a world language, and the need for a critical self-examination within the field of applied linguistics. As a whole, the collection presents an international view of linguistics and policy, power, and inequality, with an appeal for teachers and students to work together for more equality and better conditions.
