✦ Synopsis
When encryption slows you down. If you want to conduct electronic commerce on your Web site or publish confidential material you may need to use encryption. Unfortunately servers can be choked by the number crunching involved in encrypting files. To combat this there has been developed a number of cryptographic accelerator boards, or crypt0 cards, that plug into a PC1 slot and use processors specifically designed to handle the task of encryption. The idea is to off-load encryption duty from your server's main processor to a specialized board. Rainbow Technologies in the USA is planning to release an accelerator card called CryptoSwift for Windows NT, MacOS, Solaris and Linux that can handle up to 16 concurrently running applications. The card accelerates security protocols such as SSL, SET and PCT, and conforms to the RSA, DSS and DH encryption standards.
