โฆ Synopsis
Let's face it: WCF and LINQ to Entities are not the most exciting subjects for a book. But if these are topics you need or want to learn about, this book is a good resource. The author starts from the basics of WCF to give you a good foundation. He then builds on that to create more complex multi-tiered WCF application. He takes a simlar approach with LINQ of building on the basics and then eventually getting to handling concurrency and distributed transactions.
Another good thing is that it is current and up to date with VS 2010 and .Net 4.0. Even if you are not on those products yet, its always helpful to know what's coming so you can architect your solutions accordingly.
If your learning style is walkthroughs, then this is an excellent way to develop an understanding of the material. The one thing the book lacks is some connection to real-world. If there were some war stories to make the prose a bit more interesting, I would have given it 5 stars.
If you want to follow the examples, make sure you have VS 2010 and SQL Server available. The examples use the Northwind database, which you will need to download and attach (instructions are included in the text). For the last chapter, distributed transactions, you will also need a second SQL Server if you want to follow the examples. Also, be aware that the examples are C#, just in case anyone is still on VB.Net.
