โฆ Synopsis
Water softening by an interionic diffusion pzc?c!es s acruss a cation- exchange membrane is studied. A twenty compartment laboratory scale unit with an effective crcessectional a=a of 63 zm2 is assemblsd and studied for water softening using an interpolyxmr cation emzhange membrane developed in this institute. Alternate compartments f0W by thin gaskets are fed with synthetic h&d waters and sodium chloride as regenerant Solution in a counter current series flow arrangenznt, Results on softening of hard water of 500, 1000. 1500 ppin as CaCO, containing sodium chloride in the ratios: l:O, 1:l and lt2 are given, The regenerant concentrations of O-S, l-0 and 1-S N are studied for softening efficiency. Diffusion of salt and water through the menibraned and the effect of regeneration levells to achieve 8m softening is aIS0 investigated-The commercial prcsSpects for a COnici-nuOuS
