The amount of water absorbed by lacquer coatings on a metallic substrate was determined on t h e basis o f electrical measurements. The time necessary for penetration o f water d o w n 'to t h e substrate was determined which allowed t h e evaluation of diffusion coefficients. Capacitance measurements were also carried out. The results obtained with these t w o methods were consistent within t h e limits o f experimental error. The calculations were made with t h e assumption that t h e transport o f water occurs in accordance with Fick's law. The knowledge o f the diffusion coefficient for water can be t h e basis f o r t h e comparative evaluation o f varnish coating quality from t h e protective properties point o f view.
