β¦ Synopsis
No comprehensive waste regulation exists in the Republic of Ireland. The greatest influence on the development of Irish environmental law and policy has been the EU. Criteria for regulations on waste are currently being developed by the Department of the Environment. Most waste is disposed of in landfill sites and the level of monitoring is very low. Many private companies offer waste disposal services and often have their own tip sites. Only recently has recycling become more common as several new companies have set up services, mainly targeting packaging waste. Current performance and the future initiatives that Ireland may develop in relation to waste management are examined.
