✦ Synopsis

Research initiatives of E. J. Richards at the University of Southampton on wall-pressure fluctuations beneath a turbulent boundary layer, some forty years ago, are reviewed. This work became part of a worldwide research effort in a field which has since burgeoned into one of extraordinary breadth. One fundamentally important aspect of the research-the establishment of the basic statistical correlation and spectral properties of the wall-pressure field-is selected for examination of the progress which has been made.
