The photoabsorption spectrum of the O 2 Schumann-Runge bands was measured with resolution comparable to the Doppler widths by using the VUV Fourier transform spectrometer from Imperial College, London, combined with synchrotron radiation as a continuum light source at the Photon Factory, KEK, Japan.

Absorption spectra of molecular oxygen were measured in the laboratory under temperature and pressure conditions prevailing in the Earth's atmosphere. Spectra of pure O 2 , O 2 Ο© N 2 , and O 2 Ο© Ar were recorded in the 41 700 to 33 000 cm Οͺ1 region (240 -300 nm) at a maximal optical path difference
