ON May 11, 1923, a marricd woman, age 42, was admitted to Lewisham Hospital with the following history :-- She was said t o have suffcred from gastric ulcer when a girl many years ago, but had for ycars been quite well until fourteen days bcforc admission. Shc vomited bcforc getting u p one morning. She got up and did her housework, but 'fclt weak', and for the ensuing four (lays she vomited all her food. and then on the fifth day (wmmcnced vomiting continuously, anything she took boiiig brought u p a t once. The vomit was watery arid almost clear, containing no bile, and thc quantity was greater than the volume of fluid takcn iri.
