✦ Synopsis
The reduction of the production of odd deuterium by a factor of 3.05 should reduce the formation of HD by a similar factor if eddy diffusion is strong. If eddy diffusion is weak, then an altitude profile of the reaction H + HO 2 → H 2 + O 2 may be used to calculate this factor, which is equal to 4.4 and 3.5 for the photochemical models of Nair et al. (1994) and Krasnopolsky (1995), respectively. The chemical lifetime of odd hydrogen is smaller than the mixing time in both models, and the expected ratio of the HD and H 2 formation rates is smaller than the HDO/H 2 O ratio approximately by a factor of 3.7.
On page 600, near the middle of column 2, "Accordingly, the total loss of water from Mars exceeds by factors of 4.75 and 9..." should be read instead of "...by factors of 4.75 and 12." Some numbers in Table I on page 601 are misprinted; the corrected Table I follows 194
