✦ Synopsis
Different structural changes of polycrystalline platinum surfaces promoted by fast periodic potential perturbations and followed by voltammetry in 1 M H,SO, are compared to those assigned in the literature to either platinum (111) or platinum (100) single crystal surfaces. A clear correlation is found between the surface structures of platinum achieved after different thermal, chemical and electrochemical electrode treatments. Electrode surfaces with common preferred orientations coming from either polycrystalline or single crystal platinum represent metal surface structures where residual mechanical stresses are, in principle, absent.
