This contribution reports on a study of the rheological behavior of Athabasca topped heavy oil as a prototype oil derived from western Canadian bitumen. Mixtures of crudes with additives such as pentane and toluene are studied. Data obtained using three different rheometers superpose rather well. Observed non-Newtonian behavior was successfully modeled by a simplified equation, derived from a model proposed by De Kee and Chan Man Fong (1 994). Yield stress data were determined using a technique which does not involve extrapolation. Both yield stress as well as viscosity data obey Arrhenius type relations over the temperature range studied.

Dans cet article, on presente une etude du comportement rheologique de I'huile lourde d'Athabasca decantee comme huile prototype derivee des bitumes de I'Ouest canadien. Des melanges de bruts avec des additifs comme le pentane et le tolueme sont etudies. Les donnees obtenues a I'aide de trois rheometres differents se superposent assez bien. Le comportement non newtonien observe est modelise avec succes par une equation simplifiee, calculee a partir d'un modele propose par De Kee et Chan man Fong (1994). Les donnees de seuil de contraintes ont ete determinees a I'aide d'une technique ne requerant pas d'extrapolation. Les donnees de contrainte seuil et la viscosite suivent des relations de type Arrhenius dam la gamme de temperatures etudiee.
