โœฆ Synopsis

The viscosity dependency of the rate constant of intramolecular excimer formation in 1,3-di(N-carbazolyl)-propane and meso-2,4-di(N-carbazolyl)pentane in a series of alkane solvents is reported. The results are fitted to the models of Gegiou, Kramers, and Skinner and Wolynes. The models of Krmers, and of Skinner and Wolynes fail to describe the experimental data of 1,3-di(N-carbazoly1)-propane, the model of Gegiou, which is based on the froe volume required for rotation processos, describes accurately these data. The data of meso-2,4-di(N-carbazolyl)pent.ne, in the measured viscosity domain, are nearly equally adequate described by the three models.

Steady-state fluorescence has been used to study the dependence of the intramolecular formation of excimers in media of differing viscosity, 7, for model compounds of polyesters containing naphthalene groups. The model compounds are derived from 2-naphthalene carboxylic acid as rigid units and glyco
