✦ Synopsis
The need for a quick and simple method to determine compatibility in polyblends is highlighted. The basis of the viscosity method for compatibility determination in polymer blends and alloys is explained and its advantages are enumerated. The viscosity method has been applied to PVC/ABS polyblends, made from various grades of PVC and ABS. Polyblends and PVC (k-57) with two types of ABS have been shown to be compatible. On the other hand, incompatibility manifests in blends of PVC (k-67) with both ABS grades. This incompatibility or phase separation is believed to play a key role in the toughening behaviour'of PVC/ABS polyblends. Compatibility results obtained by the new viscometric method agree well with literature as well as with our own results on the PVC/ABS system. The viscosity method appears to be sensitive enough to meet requirements of polyblend technologists.
