✦ Synopsis

This study seeks to fill some of the gaps in our current understanding of the theoretical factors that influence inmate misconduct. Using two samples of youths paroled from California Youth Authority institutions, this study examined an integrated model of selected importation and deprivation factors on inmate acts of violence and drug use. Logistic regression analyses revealed that both importation and deprivation factors influence inmate violent misconduct. The results did not support an integrated model in explaining drug misconduct, but are suggestive of a model that integrates both importation and deprivation theories in explaining inmate maladjustment.
