Abstract

Biological and social scientists met to consider violence as a form of human behavior. Rather than conflicting conclusions, what emerged was a set of hypotheses — some of long standing, others new — that tended to fit together and form a coherent, if still far from complete, picture in spite of the striking diversity of disciplines and methods represented. Not for the first time, but with unusual force, the old idea of heredity versus experience as determing behavior was exposed as now quite useless. In its place are specific new formulations of how heredity and experience interact in determining human behavior, violent or not.
