✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The vinyl‐type homo‐ and copolymerization of 9‐norborn‐5‐en‐2yl‐nonane acid ethyl ester and 2‐hexyl‐5‐norbornen was investigated. Both monomers were polymerized using di‐µ‐chlorobis(6‐methoxybicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐2‐ene‐endo‐5__σ__,2π)palladium(II) and AgSbF~6~ as catalysts. Poly(2‐hexyl‐5‐norbornene) is soluble in common organic solvents and has a T~g~ of 252 °C. Poly(9‐norborn‐5‐en‐2yl‐nonane acid ethyl ester) shows swelling in solvents like THF, chlorobenzene or chloroform and has a T~g~ of 136 °C. The solubility of the copolymers depends on the amount of 9‐norborn‐5‐en‐2yl‐nonane acid ethyl ester. E‐modulus measurements of copolymers with different amounts of ester showed an increase of flexibility when increasing the content of 9‐norborn‐5‐en‐2yl‐nonane acid ethyl ester in the copolymer. magnified image

When testing copolymers of ethylene and aryl-substituted norbornenes with the Charpy impact method it was found that under certain polymerization conditions their impact properties increased with increasing polymerization time. It was also found that this improvement on impact properties was due to
