New methods of skin melanin quantifications were done for the optimization of the parameters of the intense pulsed light treatments. Direct measurements of skin colors will help individualize the judgments apart from the Fitzpatrick skin type classification. The spectrophotometer (Minolta, c-250 d) was used to acquire the numerical data. The range of measurements was from 460-760 nm, 10 nm apart. The data were processed to calculate the quantification of the melanin, oxy-and reduced hemoglobin in the skin by the double regression analysis. The conventional values of L*, a*, b* color space and spectral reflectance were also obtained. ALL the patients were measured with the spectrophotometer before the photofacial treatments and the melanin values were referred for optimizing the parameter settings and selecting cut-off filters. From the darkest melanin value of sunburned forehead of a patient was 1.762 Γ 10 Γ5 L mole Γ1 cm Γ1 , where the fairest portion of another cheek showed 0.536 Γ 10 Γ5 L mole Γ1 cm Γ1 . The values varied from portion to portion on the same face of a patients. The measurements of inner upper arm were regularly done for the reference. The lowest melanin of the upper arm of a patient was 0.328 Γ 10 Γ5 L mole Γ1 cm Γ1 . The melanin gradually diminished from ten to twenty percent of the last treatment if the patient precociously avoided the UV light. The plotted melanin pattern of various portions of control group did not coincide with the plotted pattern Mexameter, L:*, a* and b*. The melanin quantification of skin will be the new armamentarium for the light and laser treatment.
