β¦ Synopsis
Exact and adiabatic treatments of resonance Raman excitation profiles of vibronically active totally symmetric modes are compared. It is shown that an extension of the adiabatic treatment beyond linear non-Condon terms is necessary for situations where the interacting electronic states have very different equilibrium geometries. The adiabatic approach fails for profiles in which vibronic coupling effects shift the intensity strongly into the high-energy region of the electronic transition.
