โฆ Synopsis
Two-dimensional vibrations of a long, inextensible, cylindrical membrane are considered. The membrane is attached to a horizontal base along two generators and is inflated with an incompressible, inviscid liquid. First the equilibrium shape of the membrane is determined, neglecting its weight. Then small vibrations about this configuration are investigated. Numerical results are obtained with the use of the finite difference method and the boundary element method. The variations of vibration frequencies with the internal pressure head, perimeter-to-base ratio, and liquid density are examined. Experiments are also conducted, and the observed frequencies are compared to the results of the analysis.
