โฆ Synopsis
A method is given to estimate the power transmitted from one membrane to another in the case of several partially joined membranes, undergoing small amplitude transverse oscillations at high frequency, when one of the membranes is excited by a point force. The problem is equivalent to that of an acoustics problem forced by an oscillatory line source and the language of acoustics is used. A ray theory approach is used and this is compared with statistical energy analysis (SEA) and a numerical method. The simple configuration, chosen here to facilitate some analytical treatment, is not particularly well suited for the application of SEA methods, which ideally requires a more 'random' geometry. Nevertheless, for the case of two membranes, ray theory and SEA give good agreement. In the case of three membranes the agreement is less good and it is conjectured that SEA is less accurate in this instance.
