✦ Synopsis


excitation and fluorescence spedra of hydrogen chloride diluted in dense xenon are recorded for the purpose of mmparing the behaviour in the hqurd and solid phases of the sohent. The role of symmetry for the oscillator entironment is pointed out: a central branch IS induced in the spectra m the liquid, but is absent in the solid. The main spectrosmpic trends CXI be understood dy, but a quantitative interpretation needs knowledge of anharmonic terms in the vibrational potential and the txatment of intermolecular vibration--rotation mupling which are shown to play an important role-m our observations_
