โœฆ Synopsis

We report on the vibrational population of NW+ ions in the X %+ and A *II states formed by electron impact in a low-pressure ion source. The theoretical analysis includes ionization in the source as a vertical process and radiative decay of the excited A state during the flight of the resulting ion beam. The presented theoretical results allow for a consistent interpretation of highresolution translational energy spectroscopy data of transitions between the X and A states in N02+ during collisions with He reported previously.

The internal energy of thiophenol ions formed by moderate energy electron-impact ionization was measured as a function of the ttme after ionization using a visible laser probe. Immediately after ionization, it was found that about 60% of the ions had internal energies greater than 0.8 eV. At collisi
