✦ Synopsis

This paper is concerned with the vibration of inhomogeneous strings, rods and membranes with continuously varying properties. The work has two main purposes. First we provide speci"c examples for which closed-form exact solutions are obtained. Apart from their intrinsic interest, such examples serve as benchmark problems against which the accuracy of approximate analytical or numerical methods may be assessed. The second objective is to demonstrate the e!ectiveness of an integral-equation-based method for obtaining lower bounds for vibration frequencies.
