โฆ Synopsis
An orthogonal cable network is considered as a chain of interconnected elements. One such chain consists of a number of x-directed pretensioned straight cables meeting orthogonally a y-directed pretensioned cable. For the analysis of free vibration of the network, the transfer matrix method has been used. The formulation consists of obtaining transfer matrices successively for a single cable, a joint, a chain and finally the whole network. By using the boundary conditions of the network, the characteristic equation is obtained, and is solved for the natural frequencies. Results are obtained for a set of square networks and are compared with those obtained by other authors using the finite element method. It is observed that the present approach reduces the computer memory and computation time requirements, in addition to providing exact values of the natural frequencies.
