โฆ Synopsis
Purpose: Compare upper lid blepharoplasty with a diamond laser scalpel (SureBlade, Clinicon Corp, Carlsbad, CA) to free beam CO 2 laser and steel scalpel techniques. Methods: Two studies of 10 patients each were undertaken. Each lid was randomized to either the diamond laser scalpel (DLS) or the CO 2 in the ยฎrst study or to the DLS or the steel scalpel in the second study. Surgical time and time to achieve hemostasis were measured. Postoperatively, masked observors evaluated erythema, bleeding, edema, pain and wound scar at P/O day 1, week 1, week 2, week 4 and month 4. A statistician performed analysis.
Results: The DLS and free beam CO 2 produced similar results. The DLS produced superior results through the early postoperative period compared to the steel scalpel. Conclusions: The DLS is the equal of the free beam CO 2 laser as an incisional instrument for upper lid blepharoplasty and is superior to the steel blade. Compared to the free beam CO 2 , the DLS offers the advantages of tactile feedback and the option of use without coagulation.
