Recordings of lightning strikes to a wide range of practical structures are used to investigate the statistical nature of lightning strike incidence. Using the scatter of the lightning incidence onto a given attractive area, comparisons are made between the theoretically estimated and the observed strike incidence. It is shown that the strike frequency data are well described by a Poisson distribution for the ground ash density and a log-normal distribution for lightning current. The uncertainties in the estimation of ground ash density are determined, taking into account factors such as year-to-year variability and the observation time span.
